This article is the first in a series that Fondapol plans to publish on the right in Europe over the coming months. We will be looking at a total of ten European countries. Fondapol few weeks ahead of the British general election, Fondapol has devoted its first article to Great Britain. The author, David Hanley, Professor Emeritus of European Studies at the University of Cardiff, looks at the origins and the ideology the British Conservative Party, led by David Cameron since December 2005. Professor Hanley describes the organisation, the networks and the running of the Great Britain’s leading opposition party. He gives an overview of the state of the British right on the eve of a critical election for the Tories, after 13 years in opposition, the longest period in their history.
