The German Economy on the Eve of the General Election

Working Paper - Monday 21 September 2009
With the country in the grip of a recession, economic issues have dominated Germany’s federal election campaign. The campaign has focused on the economic and financial crisis, taxes and the funding of the pension system, the environment and energy policy, the introduction of a minimum wage, the accountability and compensation of corporate bosses, transport and infrastructure policy, military engagement abroad and public health. While all parties agree on the basic issues, they differ on how they aim to achieve their policy goals.

A few days ahead of the 27 September 2009 general election, the Fondation pour l’innovation politique provides an analysis, by Nicolas Bouzou and Jérôme Duval-Hamel, setting out the issues and challenges facing the German economy.
