Summit of the Awakening for Liberal Democracies: What New Transatlantic Alliance?

The new edition of the Le Sursaut forum, entitled “Pour un sursaut des démocraties libérales : quelle nouvelle alliance transatlantique?” took place at the town hall of the 4th arrondissement of Paris.

The event, organised at the initiative of AJC Europe and the Fondation pour l’innovation politique, was characterised by a full day of exchanges and debates, and brought together some thirty quality speakers in front of an audience of over 300 people.

Laure Mandeville, reporter for Le Figaro newspaper, Brice Couturier, editorialist for France Culture and Bernard Schalscha, editorialist for La Règle du Jeu, took turns leading the roundtables, conversations and discussions.

Numerous representatives of civil society, political leaders, researchers and personalities from the cultural world, French, European and American, joined us to promote the importance of transatlantic relations in the current context of the crisis of liberal democracies. Katharina Von Schnurbein, Raphaël Enthoven, Bernard Henri Lévy, Jamie Kirchick, Laurent Bouvet, Alice Schwarzer, Alain Finkielkraut, Frédéric Potier, Felix Klein, François Zimeray, Luc Ferry and Anastasia Colosimo honored us with their presence.

The day opened with the deciphering of the results of an IFOP survey exclusively carried out for the event, in partnership with Le Figaro, on the subject “what public judgment has been made on Franco-American relations and the future of democracies”?

As Simone Rodan Benzaquen, Director of AJC Europe, pointed out in her closing speech at the event: “More than a relationship, a pact or an alliance, it is a common destiny that Europe shares with the United States. The results of the survey are proof of this: 79% of the population surveyed feel a great friendship for Americans, despite the fact that they often disapprove of President Donald Trump’s policies”.

This event follows the one organised on 6 April 2016, by AJC Europe, with the Fondation pour l’innovation politique, the Fondation Jean-Jaurès, the Lab’AFEV, the AFVT and the Wilfried Martens Centre. It focused on the fight against the dangers of Islamism, terrorism and populist recuperation in Europe. It brought together nearly 1,000 people at the Déjazet theater in front of more than 60 speakers, French and European, including Manuel Valls, Bruno Le Maire, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Dominique Schnapper, Gilles Clavreul, Amin El Khatmi, Delphine Horvilleur, Raphaël Enthoven, Gilles Kepel, Raphaël Glucksmann, Alexandra Lagnel Lavastine, Maajid Nawaz, Irshad Manji. The event was widely covered by the media; about a hundred articles were published in the press on this subject.
