Brazil: the other democracy in crisis?

brésil

The Brazilian think tank República do Amanhã and the Fondation pour l’innovation politique organised a debate following the Brazilian elections. On 28 October 2019, Jair Bolsonaro, candidate of the social-liberal party, was elected President of Brazil.

In a country marked by a strong recession, repeated corruption scandals involving all political parties in the country’s political life have been a source of concern. Traditional policies and sharply rising levels of violence, Jair Bolsonaro has managed to present himself as the man capable of bringing Brazil out of its slump.

A controversial political personality, his accession to the presidency of the largest country in South America raises a number of questions that the Fondation pour l’innovation politique and the think-tank Repùblica do Amanhã have exchanged views on: is Brazil’s democracy under threat? What could be the consequences of this historic election? The debate took place between Octavio de Barros, President of República do Amanhã, Chantal Barata, Director of República do Amanhã, Christophe de Voogd, President of the Scientific and Evaluation Council of the Fondation pour l’innovation politique, and Dominique Reynié, Executive Director of the Fondation pour l’innovation politique.
