On 19 June 2019, the Fondation pour l’innovation politique travelled to Skopje in North Macedonia to present its global survey, Democracies Under Pressure, carried out in partnership with the International Republican Institute (IRI).
The participants in this round table were Dominique Reynié, Executive Director of the Fondation pour l’innovation politique, Bujar Osmani, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, Christian Thimonier, French Ambassador to Skopje, Thibault Muzergues, Director of the European Office of the International Republican Institute and Ilina Mangova, Director of the North Macedonia Office of the International Republican Institute. Discussions focused on the interpretation of the survey results at the European, North Macedonia and Balkan levels, as well as on the state of progress of the country’s accession negotiations with the European Union.
The global survey Democracies Under Pressure comprises two volumes: the first volume is devoted to themes and issues such as confidence in institutions, adherence to the model of representative democracy, support for abortion or the death penalty, the decline of democratic values among new generations, etc.; the second volume is dedicated to the forty-two countries in the survey with, for each of them, a summary sheet on the state of national opinion. In order to rank each country in relation to all the others, we offer the reader an “index of democratic culture”.
